In our fast-paced world, staying sharp and focused can feel like an uphill battle. Optimizing cognitive function isn’t just about keeping up—it’s about thriving. Functional medicine takes a whole-body approach to brain health, and here’s the great news: small, intentional, consistent steps in key areas can lead to big results.

💤 1. Prioritize Sleep

Your brain cleanses and regenerates itself during sleep. Skimping on quality shut-eye can impair memory, focus, and mood.
- Action Steps:

  • Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep per night.

  • Keep a consistent sleeping (and eating) schedule, even on weekends.

  • Ideal sleep environment: cool, dark, quiet.

  • Create a bedtime routine—dim lights, switch out blue light for red light, avoid screens, have your last meal 3-4 hours before bed, and wind down with a calming activity like reading or meditation. Avoid alcohol generally, but especially 3-4 hours before bed.

  • Track your sleep for at least 4-6 weeks to get a good understanding!

  • Fun (crazy) fact: just ONE night of less than optimal sleep puts you at a cognitive level of someone who is intoxicated!

🧘 2. Manage Stress & Emotional Health

Chronic stress can lead to cognitive decline over time. Emotional health matters as much as physical health for a clear mind.
- Action Steps:

  • Practice mindfulness or meditation daily, even if just for 5 minutes, but ideally 20 minutes per day.

  • Engage in regular therapy or journaling to process emotions.

  • Cultivate gratitude—list 3 things you’re thankful for every morning.

  • Fun (crazy) fact: 20 minutes of meditation daily is as effective as antidepressant/anxiety medication!

🥗 3. Nourish Your Brain with Food

Your brain thrives on nutrient-rich foods, and what you eat directly impacts cognition.
- Action Steps:

  • Incorporate brain-boosting foods like fatty fish, leafy greens, berries, and nuts.

  • Avoid added sugar and processed foods, which can contribute to brain fog.

  • Consider anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric.

🏃 4. Exercise for Mental Clarity

Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, boosts neuroplasticity, and improves memory.
- Action Steps:

  • Aim for ~2 days/week of higher intensity exercise and ~2 days/week of moderate intensity/endurance work.

  • Mix strength training with cardio and activities that require focus - like yoga or Pilates.

  • Take breaks every hour to stretch and move during sedentary workdays.

🛡️ 5. Limit Toxin Exposure

Toxins in food, air, and water can interfere with cognitive health.
- Action Steps:

  • Choose organic produce when possible to reduce pesticide exposure.

  • Filter your air and water to minimize heavy metals and other contaminants.

  • Use non-toxic cleaning and personal care products.

⚖️ 6. Support Hormonal Balance

Your hormones play a critical role in brain health, affecting mood, energy, and cognition.
- Action Steps:

  • Get quarterly bloodwork to monitor hormone levels - including thyroid, cortisol, and sex hormones.

  • Incorporate healthy fats to support hormone production.

  • Avoid endocrine disruptors found in plastics and certain chemicals.

By focusing on these areas, you’ll not only enhance your cognitive function but also support overall wellness. Remember, every small change adds up. Your brain deserves the best!
